1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
1.1 PURPOSE
This specification, when supplemented with the related drawings, parts list and other
specifications, defines Countertop Automatic Drip coffeemakers with glass and Thermal carafes.
1.2 SCOPE
Included in this specification are the major engineering requirements and test limits for the manufacture,
agency approval and test of 120 volt Countertop Automatic Drip coffeemakers.

2 PRODUCT DEFINITIONS
2.1 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
2.1.1 Safe
Before or after a normal or abnormal use, drop, or environmental test, the minimum requirement for “safe” is the completion of Leakage Current test per HHPE035, Dielectric Withstand test per HHPE036, and sharp edge test per HHPT001 and unit drop test per HHPQ001, with passing results. Also, there must be no access to live parts as determined by the use of the UL articulated probe, or fire hazard as defined below. Upon completion of a life test, the requirements are the same.
2.1.2 Functional
The unit operation and function to meet descriptions and instructions as defined in the use and care manual.
2.1.3 Fire Hazard
Fire hazard is defined by the latest applicable safety standard. In addition, a product is considered to involve a risk of fire if there is any emission of flame or molten metal (other than drops of solder), or if the operation of the product results in molten or flaming material under, on, or in proximity to the product under test. The materials referenced are defined by the individual test.

2.1.4 Reliability
The probability of a product performing, without failure, a specified function under given conditions for a specified period of time. Reliability estimates, for the general population of a given product, are derived through the testing of production representative samples to specified consumer usage pattern during the qualification phase and verified on the sample basis during the production life cycle of the product. The standard reliability model for appliances is 90% reliability @ 70% confidence factor over 3-year operating life.
2.1.5 Normal Use
“Normal Use” implies to only the handling required to use the product as intended. All handling to be with regard for the product, within the guidelines of use and care instructions, and as advertised.

2.1.6 Abnormal Use
Handling outside the definition of normal use and as defined in UL and CSA standards.

2.1.7 Pumping Cycle
The energized time of the hot water generator from initial power on to the first thermostat
deactivation with the reservoir empty.

2.1.8 Brew Cycle
The total elapsed time from initial power on to when the coffee basket is completely drained, as
defined by 5 seconds between drops out of the basket.

2.2 General Requirements

2.2.1 Quality
The source product manufactured for Applica Consumer Products shall be manufactured under controlled conditions in accordance with the approved Manufacturing and Quality Inspection plans for the product as stipulated by the requirements outlined in the purchase order and Applica’s Quality Plan per Best Directive D3AF and implemented through the Supplier’s Quality Plan.

2.2.2 Change Control
The design documentation package which includes the documents required by the Product Development Guide and are controlled under the preliminary revision control and changes are permitted by the manufacturer with prior notification to Applica.

The manufacturer shall use the Design Record document (BEST Directive D3D) for all changes requested during the engineering development phase. The design documentation package will be frozen by mutual agreement between the manufacturer and Applica prior to the start of the pilot production. All changes requested after this date will be implemented through Engineering Change Notice (ECN) process per the BEST Directive D3D and approved by Applica prior to formal implementation. If required, the manufacturer shall be responsible for the charges associated with the qualification of the design modification and submitted with the ECN.

2.2.3 Deviations
Part substitution or parts that deviate from the Engineering Drawings or Bill of
Materials (BOM) shall not be used in the manufacture of the product without the prior approval from Applica. The manufacturer shall complete the deviation per BEST Directive D6N and submit to the Applica representative for review and approval.

4 PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS

4.1 General 1 Documentation: The supplier will be responsible for keeping all the design data and made available to Applica upon request. Alternate materials, parts, processes shall not be used without approval from Applica. All the manufacturing of the product must meet the dimensions and the specifications outlined on their respective piece part drawings. The supplier shall make available and maintain up to date drawings of components, assemblies, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
2 Listing Agencies: The units must comply with UL Specification 1082.
3 Applica is responsible for the application of Agency certification. Supplier will submit units for approval and follow up process per Applica’s direction. However, if the product failed on the 2nd submission for safety agency test, the supplier shall be responsible for the fee.
4.2 Construction / Mechanical Performance Units must meet all the technical specifications. All deviations and changes need approval from Applica prior to implementation and the start of production of units. Units must meet all the reliability requirements as specified in this document. The tests and measurements shall be performed as specified and record results. A statistical capability Cpk shall be greater or equal to 1.33.
4.2.1 General:
4.2.2 Top lid: Material – PP 1. Please provide your PC plastic supplier or equivalent approved by Applica; Pass UL & Economical
2. Top lid hinge must be designed to hold top lid solidly through out the life.
3. The top lid shall be designed to meet the required mechanical snap fit retention force of 0.90 kg (2.0 lb.) minimum direct pull for hinge. It shall remain easily assembled by the consumer should the lid come off.
4. The top lid shall move freely from a closed horizontal position to a position 100 5 degrees from the horizontal.
5. The top lid shall not shed internally splashed or condensed water to the exterior of the unit. Furthermore, the action of opening or closing the lid shall not cause drainage to the exterior of the coffee maker. Please check and record.
4.2.3 Upper housing: Material – PP 1. Please provide your PP plastic supplier or equivalent approved by Applica; Pass UL & Economical
2. The reservoir shall be capable of containing 66 oz of water and 60 oz in the Carafe on output without any overflow. For the thermal 8 cup version, the reservoir shall be held a max volume of 50.7fl.ozs (1.50 L) and still remain at 5.0 mm (0.20 inch) or greater below the bottom of the overflow hole.
Note: The CM1509 thermal carafe’s internal volume is larger than DE790B model.
3. The reservoir shall be designed to relieve water overflow in a SAFE manner. The reservoir shall have an area designed for controlled release of water at a level below the volume of water that would produce an overflow of brewed coffee in the intended carafe. HHPB069.
4.2.4 Brew basket front face accent: Material -stainless steel SUS202

4.2.7 Shower head: Material – PP 1. The shower head is designed to pivot so that the normal exit of hot water is redirected. The product must include means to direct the flow of hot water into either the basket or the reservoir should the cover be opened during use.
2. It shall include a shower head cover to cover the brew basket.
3. Adequate venting of the shower head must be provided to reduce the tendency to pressurize the hot water generator or cause lid “chatter” during normal use.

4.2.11 Removable brew basket: Material – PP 1. Removable shall be designed with lock or added extra weight so that it won’t be floating when carafe in warming plate.
2. The valve shall be designed completely to be opened when carafe in place.
3. Assembly will be top-rack dishwasher-safe.
4. Capacity: Refer to the Technical Specification section.
5. With the coffee maker set up for a normal max. brew using Folgers brand drip coffee and a standard cupcake paper filter. The Brew Basket must be capable of complete drainage of coffee and stop dripping within 60 seconds of final shut off of the thermostat. (Dripping is considered stopped when there is 5 second duration between drips.)
6. Upon removal of the carafe during or at completion of brew no more than 4 drops of coffee shall reach the hot plate. Must pass 125 consecutive cycles in dishwasher on maximum heat, duration, and drying cycle, without deformation, or wrapage.
4.2.12 Pause & Serve (Sneak-A-Cup): Material – PP 1 It shall be designed with mushroom type activated mechanism.
2 Capable of stopping the flow of coffee from the brew basket when carafe is removed for up to 30 seconds at any time during brew cycle. Verify the specifications are met.
4.2.13 Water Window: Material – PP Please provide your PP plastic supplier or equivalent approved by Applica; Pass UL & Economical Water level marking must match the carafe level cups marking.
4.2.14 Water Filter: (N/A) 1 Water filter to pass applicable FDA requirements. During intended filter life of 2 months or 20 gallons of water the flow of water from reservoir to heat generator must not slow the brew cycle or cause the brew system performance to fall outside the parameters listed in paragraph 1.4.

3 For locating the water filter assembly in the reservoir: The water filter assembly to be placed in the floor cavity with a 1-2 LB force applied to the top center of the handle downward. The force to extract the WF assembly to be also 1-2 LB force.
4 The Water filter assembly not to dislodge from the floor cavity after insertion while filling the reservoir with water. 1 Check the latch and unlatch force if excessive

4.2.15 Warming Plate: Material – Aluminized steel

4. Keep warm performance: The unit shall maintain the temperature of a full carafe between 175F and 190F for 2-Hours.
5. Heater shall be ON when temperature lower than 248F; shall be OFF when temperature higher than 284F. Perform Test and record results as specified.

4.2.16 Phenolic Ring: Material – Phenolic (N/A to CM1509) 1 It shall be designed to be installed from outside to inside housing and locked with lower housing.

4.2.19.1 Power ON-OFF 1 Approved Vender: TBD
2 Pressing and releasing the ON Button activates the red LED power indicator and starts the brew cycle. This function shall occur whether the Clock/Timer is in the OFF or AUTO ON functions. The AUTO ON function shall be terminated. The ON function shall be terminated in 120 minutes after initiation.
3 Pressing and releasing the OFF Button terminates both the ON and AUTO ON functions. Please check and record.
4.2.19.2 Hour / Min 1. Depressing and releasing the Hr. or Min. set buttons will advance the time display one hour or one minute. Holding the buttons down will activate a rapid time advance (rate of two digits/sec.) for both hours and minutes.
2. Auto ON accuracy to be within 10 sec of auto set time.
3. Auto shut off time shall be within 120 minute +/- 10% duration.
4. Clock time keeping shall be accurate to within 1 second per hour throughout life Please check and record.
4.2.19.3 Program 1 Press the Program button to set the delay brewing time
2 Press the HR & MIN Buttons to achieve the desired start time.
3 Pressing and releasing the AUTO Button shall activate the programmed delay brewing function.
4 When the programmed time reached, the AUTO light off and power light shall be activated starting the brew cycle. Please check and record.

4.2.26 Glass Carafe: Material – Borosilicate glass with heat resistant for non-thermal type. (N/A on CM1509) 1. The carafe shall be capable of carrying the volume of water required to fill the reservoir 66 fl-oz (1.95L) (Glass carafe version) and still remain at 5.0 mm (0.20 inch) or greater below the bottom of the carafe spout. The carafe and reservoir opening shall be capable of being filled at an average rate of 5 fl-oz/sec per filled capacity without spillage or dripping (55 fl-oz in 11 seconds max.). Less than full capacity must be capable of filling within one second plus a second for each cup capacity filled. (Example: 7 seconds for a 6 cup brew ) Actual filling technique to be dependent on user and carafe and reservoir geometry.
2. The carafe shall be capable of pouring water or hot coffee centered through the spout without sheeting or dribbling, at a rate up to 4 fl-oz/sec while at any fill level, up to the resultant brew of rated reservoir capacity. When spout tipped back coffee flow to be cut off completely without any residual dripping.

4.2.26.1 Top lid : Material – PP 1 The carafe lid must not come off when filled to the marked capacity with 195 + 5F water and poured at a maintained rate of 3 to 4 fluid ounces per second until empty. The lid must then remain attached after completely inverting the carafe.

4.3 Manufacturing Performance : Unit checkout test Identifies key product characteristics that can be evaluated to determine conformance with specified requirements.

4.4 Electrical Performance
4.4.1 Unit shall operate at normal household voltage and safe to use. 1 The unit should operate at 120 volts ac, 60 Hz. The unit shall also be able to operate properly and safely between 108 and 127 volts ac.
2 The heating element of the coffee maker is to be rated at 975 Watts at 120 VAC and 60 Hz
3 The heating element shall have an allowable range of wattage rating of 878 to 1023 Watts. Rating =975W +5% / -10%
4.4.2 Capacitor component for power step down 1 It shall use X2 grade.
2 It shall be accepted if the supplier can provide supporting data from the component manufacturer concerning the reliability of the capacitor on lot to lot basis.

4.4.3 Power Interruption Time and function settings shall be maintained for power interruptions up to 0.6 seconds in the OFF, ON or AUTO ON countdown mode. Acceptance Criteria: Under no case shall a power interruption cause the module to trigger the ON or AUTO ON modes.
4.4.4 Electrostatic Discharge Test (ESD Test) The module shall pass Engineering Procedure HHPL001. i. Acceptance criteria: Minimum +/- 15 KV resistance.

4.4.5 Electrical Disturbances The appliance shall be capable of surviving power lines disturbances as specified. The unattended turn on or malfunction of the appliance during or after the application of the disturbances which exposes the consumer to potential hazard shall be classified as test failure. The temporary loss of function or features of the appliance (Soft Failure) is permissible, if the function or feature is restored after resetting the AC power. 4.4.6 Electrical Fast Transient (EFT)/Burst Test The appliance will be subjected to Level 3 voltage amplitude as defined by IEC61000-4-4 Titled Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) – Electrical Fast Transient/Burst Immunity Tests and applied in accordance to HHPL015. Level 3 is defined as open-circuit output test voltage amplitude of 2KV @ repetition rate of 5 KHz and the waveform shall be applied to both line and neutral in positive & negative polarities HHPL015
4.4.7 Surge Immunity Test (LVT Test) The appliance will be subjected to Level 3 combination wave @ 1.2/50 us open-circuit voltage and 8/20 us short-circuit current with magnitude of 2.0 KV as defined by IEC61000-4-5 Titled Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Section 5 Surge Immunity Test and applied in accordance to HHPL003. The combination waveform shall be applied to both line/neutral in positive & negative polarities @ the phase angle 0 through 270 degrees. HHPL003
4.4.8 Voltage Dips and Variation Testing The appliance will be subjected to variable voltage dips 0-70% and interruptions 100-30% for duration 0.5 seconds as defined by IEC61000-4-11 Titled Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Voltage Dips, Interruptions and Variation and applied in accordance to HHPL016. Integrated into the interruption test sequence is the verification of the microcontroller reset characteristics when is power is interrupted. The appliance shall reset to known state. The uncontrolled & abnormal behavior of the appliance after the power restoration is classified as test failure.

4.7 Safety
4.7.1 Applicable Agency Tests The product shall be evaluated by the listing agency to demonstrate compliance with the safety standard UL 1082. Selected tests from the standard that are not covered by Applica's test protocols and provide greater confidence in the safety assessment of the product shall be repeated during the qualification test phase and documented in the Design Qualification Test Plan (DQTP)
